The shoes become firmly stuck to her feet and force her to dance non-stop, to the point where she alfruchtwein dies from exhaustion and starvation. We can scoff at the little girls foolishness, but, in real life, we often do the same thing - we chase after the things that wethinkwill make us happy and dont realize that were heading down a dangerous path. One study found that the people who experience the greatest job satisfaction arent the ones in the big, fancy offices theyre the ones who approach their work as a calling, even when that work involves menial labor.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreAnother study found that simply seeing fehlte nicht viel-food logos makes people impatient. Its not that theres some intrinsic characteristic of fast food that makes people impatient its the habits weve come to associate with fast food, such as always being on the run, eating on the go, and never slowing down enough to enjoy a healthy meal, that bring out our impatience. We have to be very careful in choosing our pursuits, because our habits make us. Cultivating the habits that follow will send you in the right direction. Theyll help you to lead a more meaningful and fulfilling life, whereby you cultivate the best within yourself.1. Stay away from people who erode your quality of lifeIf merely seeing a logo for a fast-food company can make you feel impatient, just think how much more impact a toxic person can have on your life. They might be unhappy about your decision to stay away from them, and they might tell you very loudly just how unhappy they are, but isnt avoiding them worth the cumulative effects of years of their negative influence? There are always going to be toxic people who have a way of getting under your skin and staying there. Each time you find yourself thinking about a coworker or person who makes your blood boil, practice being grateful for someone else in your life instead. There are plenty of people out there who deserve your attention, and the last thing you want to do is think about the people who dont matter.2. No more phone, tablet, or computer in bedThis is a big one, which most people dont even realize harms their sleep and productivity. Short-wavelength blue light plays an important role in determining your mood, energy level, and sleep quality. In the morning, sunlight contains high concentrations of this blue light. When your eyes are exposed to it directly, it halts production of the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin and makes you feel alert. In the afternoon, the suns rays lose their blue light, which allows your body to produce melatonin and this abflugs making you sleepy. By the evening, your brain doesnt expect any blue light exposure and is very sensitive to it. Most of our favorite evening devices- laptops, tablets, and mobile phones- emit short-wavelength blue light brightly and right in your face. This exposure impairs melatonin production and interferes with your ability to fall asleep, as well as with the quality of your sleep once you do nod off. As weve all experienced, poor nights sleep has disastrous effects. The best thing you can do is to avoid these devices after dinner (television is OK for most people, as long as they sit far enough away from the set).3. Appreciate the here and nowGratitude is fundamental to peace and happiness- not wealth, glamour, adventure, or fast cars, but simple appreciation for what you have. Just because you cant a fford champagne and caviar doesnt mean that you never enjoy a meal. Hot dogs and beer on the back deck with your friends taste just as good. So, dont fool yourself into thinking that you need something that you dont currently have in reservierung to be happy, because the truth is that if you cant appreciate what you have now, you wont be able to appreciate the good life if you ever get it.4. Realize that things arent always as you perceive them to beThis goes along with appreciating the here and now. That person you envy because they seem to have the perfect life might be dealing with all kinds of problems behind closed doors. That perfection could be a total mirage. Your employers decision to move the office might seem like a huge hassle when you first hear about it, but it could end up being one of the best things that ever happens to you. Youre not omniscient and youre not a fortune-teller, so be open to the possibility that life might have some surprises in store, because what y ou see is not always what you get.5. Get started, even though you might failMost writers spend countless hours brainstorming their characters and plots, and they even write page after page that they know theyll never include in the books. They do this because they know that ideas need time to develop. We tend to freeze up when its time to get started because we know that our ideas arent perfect and that what we produce might not be any good. But how can you ever produce something great if you dont get started and give your ideas time to evolve? Author Jodi Picoult summarized the importance of avoiding perfectionism perfectly You can edit a bad page, but you cant edit a leer page.6. Get organizedPeople joke about new ideas being in short supply, but I think that the one resource thats really scarce is spare time. Do you know anybody who has some? Yet we waste so much of it by not being organized. We touch things two or three times before we do something with them (like tossing the ma il down on the counter then moving it to the table so we can cook dinner) and once weve put them away, we spend even more time looking for them. Have a place for all of those little things you need to take care of when you get a minute, whether its your childs permission slip for a field trip or an overdue bill, and then get to them in a timely manner otherwise youll be searching through a huge stack of stuff for the one thing you need.7. departure a collection of the things that truly resonate with youHave you ever come across a quote or a meme that so perfectly summed up your feelings that you wanted to keep it forever? You know that its in one of those coats you wore five winters ago, and you really hope its not the one you gave to Goodwill. When you come across something that resonates with you - whether its something that expresses who you are or who you want to be - have a central place to keep those gems. It doesnt matter whether its a spiral notebook, a leather binder, or a folder on Evernote, have a place to collect the things that matter so that you can revisit them regularly.8. Do something that reminds you who you areWe all joke about having me time, but what is that, really? Its making time for those activities that we feel most authentically ourselves doing, when all the masks are off and we can justbe. Whether its going for a run or dancing around with your 80s favorites blaring at top volume, make time for those moments. Theyre incredibly rejuvenating.9. Say noResearch conducted at the University of California in San Francisco shows that the more difficulty that you have saying no, the more likely you are to experience stress, burnout, and even depression, all of which erode self-control. Saying no is indeed a major self-control challenge for many people. No is a powerful word that you should not be afraid to wield. When its time to say no, emotionally intelligent people avoid phrases like I dont think I can or Im not certain. Saying no to a new commitment honors your existing commitments and gives you the opportunity to successfully fulfill them. Just remind yourself that saying no is an act of self-control now that will increase your future self-control by preventing the negative effects of over commitment.10. Stick to realistic goalsHow many people start January by proclaiming, Im going to lose 30 pounds by March? Big, scary, crazy goals can be incredibly inspiring- until you fall short, and then, instead of inspiration, youre left with disappointment and guilt. Im certainly not suggesting that you stop setting goals that push and challenge you, just that you try to stick within the bounds of reality.Bringing it all togetherYour character is determined by your attitude and how you spend your time, and so is happiness. 3 Questions if You Feel Behind in Your Career -The Muse

3 Questions if You Feel Behind in Your Career -The Muse3 Questions if You Feel Behind in Your CareerYou see the latest 30 Under 30 article and- spoiler- youre not on it. Then you read a status update that your college roommate started her own business. Now, for the icing on the cake Your company honors the youngest person to ever be promoted to senior management. And, you guessed it, its not you. You start to wonder Am I falling behind in my career? The short answer is No. Careers are not a race. Nor is there one, clear, winning outcome that everyone should be striving for. However, your jump to quick comparisons may indicate that you feel like youre coming up short of your personal career goals- and that is something to pay attention to.Here are three questions to ask yourself to gut check how things really stand1. Am I Expecting Overnight Success?Youre working yourself to the bone doing what you know is great work. But your efforts arent leading to advancement and recognition, so yo ure pretty sure youre doing something wrong. Not necessarily. Youve heard the term overnight success, but do you know that people generally work for many years before that big moment? (It took Pokemon Go two decades to become a phenomenon) Or that many successful people fail before succeeding? Just because youre not receiving any cool awards or invitations (yet), doesnt mean youre on the wrong track.OK, if Im Not on the Wrong Track, How Do I Make Sure Im on the Right One?First, keep up the good work Recognize that there is value in doing a good job, independent of any external accolades. You have to put the work in before youll reap the rewards. That said, if you feel routinely overlooked, consider spending more time on making yourself stand out by working on your personal branding- that means your social media presence, your personal site, and what comes up when prospective hiring managers Google you. Its up to you to tell people around you that youre up to something special. (Bonus Even 15 minutes a week can make a difference)2. Am I Prioritizing Other Values Over Industry Fame?Imagine a world in which youre frequently asked to be a guest on The Today Show, regularly featured on Influencer lists, and called out at company meetings and given awards- youd do anything to make those things happen, right? At first, you might say, Hell yeah But then when told that it would require working seven days a week, giving up time with your friends and family, and sacrificing your sleep- you might change your mind. If youre honest with yourself, you might find you dont care about having an ambitious, award-winning career, because your priorities are truly elsewhere. You might prefer to spend all the attention and energy that other people spend climbing corporate ladders on your loved ones or hobbies. And thats OKThere are very few truly bad career choices (outside of the obvious ones which you can probably figure out on your own). Just know that every choice has consequences and how you prioritize them determines how fast you move up that ladder. I Do Love Time With My Loved Ones, But How Do I Stop Feeling Jealous When My Co-worker Wins Awards? When you find yourself making comparisons and feeling jealous, take some time to reconnect to your priorities. Remember that you get to choose what you put first- and if you want to, you can still change your mind. As long as youre happy and fulfilled, youre doing OK. 3. Have I Been Slacking Off?Some people take their career path above and beyond, becoming the professional athletes of the work world. Leveling up that hard takes blood, sweat, and tears- and if thats not your cup of tea thats okay, not everyone who jogs wants to be an Olympic sprinter. But thats also not an excuse to let your career get out of shape. Have you been running on autopilot? Sitting on the sidelines? Staying in your comfort zone and avoiding new challenges? Theres a major difference between wanting to stay where you are and coasting.Yes, I Guess Ive Been Slacking a Little Bit...Keeping with the fitness analogy Just like its possible to start eating right and exercising again, putting time and effort into your career will help you to course-correct. Identify and set new goals for yourself. (Not sure where to start? Get some help from a career coach.) Put in the work to set your career on a healthier path. There is no one-size-fits-all career path and comparing your trajectory to others isnt productive. Some professionals fly forward quickly while others take a slow and steady approach. A job can be a paycheck or a passion. Career growth may even take a back burner while kids are small or family members need extra care. The key is to pay attention and to be clear on your own priorities so that you can adjust your career to fit your goals at each phase of your life. So long as youre not falling behind in your own estimation, youre doing just fine.Photo of person looking courtesy of Hero Images/Getty Images.

Or, employees who are cross-trained to do more jobs are paid more because of the employers increased flexibility that results from their learning. A mentor, internal trainer, or supervisor/trainer is provided at each step of the job rotation plan. As an employee moves to each new job, he or she is assigned to another employee who has the responsibility to teach, answer questions, and mentor during the training.Written documentation, an employee manual, or online resource enhances employee learning. 4 On-the-Job Blunders We can all Learn From

4 On-the-Job Blunders We can all Learn From Knowing Im always in search of content for my next article, a friend sent me this story People who have stuffed up at work more than you. The article details a range of on-the-job blunders, and after reading, I realized therbeie are a few lessons we all can learn from these terrible mistakes Mistake Number 1 Failure to Watch Language at WorkWHAT NOT TO DO OVER THE PAThis is a classic example of what not to do when speaking on an intercom. A Reject Shop worker in NSW welches delivering the closing store message when she swore over the PA system.I was in the middle of a closing call in the sekretariat and a colleague got on the PA and started heavy breathing over my call, so I stopped and said F**k off the shop was still open. Whoops. My bad.Lesson learned Always use professional language in professional settings. While I think its important to monitor you r speech wherever you go, this is especially true for the workplace or any professional setting. You never know who is listening to you and/or paying attention to what you say and how you say it. It could be that a manager or co-worker is intentionally listening to your conversations or that someone in upper management accidentally overhears you say something. Either way, you dont want to give anyone the opportunity to hold your speech against you in such scenarios. Your speech should always reflect your work environment and/or professional setting, i.e. professional language.Mistake Number 2 Allowing Biases to Interfere with WorkANNOUNCERS AWKWARD ASYLUM RANTA Western Australian radio announcer made a racist remark about the boat people after he found out they were getting paid more than our pensioners. Problem is he didnt realise a town in the stations reach was where some asylum seekers were homed. AwkwardOne happened to hear what he said and confronted the station, writing an of ficial letter of complaint. The outcome? Because it was my first stuff up I got a slap on the wrist, but I do not talk about the boat people at all anymore, he told us. Wise choice.Lesson learned Dont Bring your Biases to WorkEveryone has biases this is nothing new. Yet, where and how we decide to express those biases is often what leads to trouble. If the radio announcer is a racist against boat people, thats his prerogative. Yet, he needs to leave that outside of work. The office (or radio booth) is no place for employees to put their biases, prejudices, etc. on full display. Also, if your opinions and feelings are unrelated to your job or the company, hold them for outside of work (in a personal expression, of course). The radio announcer was upset that the boat people were getting paid more than pensioners. Okay. Even this, if it was a form of injustice or wrongdoing, does not warrant the announcer to express his bias and/or prejudice toward that group of people. If an employee f eels something is unfair at work, he or she should approach his/her boss or HR department about the matter, not go off spouting racial slurs and insults at the persons will.Mistake Number 3 Using Work Resources for PleasureCAUGHT ON THE PERVEThe Macquarie Banker ogling Miranda Kerr photographs not realising the world was watching him on TV became a social media sensation overnight, but his sleazy habits caused an internal HR nightmare (Theres a video in the story).Lesson learned Just be SmartI mean, really? Employees are smart enough to know by now that 1) your company can monitor everything you do on company devices and 2) mostly everything online is traceable. If youre looking at porn or half-naked women, you will get caught. Just be smart. Youre at work to work. Leave the for pleasure internet surfing to the privacy of your own home.Mistake Number 4 UnpreparednessHELEN KAPALOS 40 SECONDS OF DEAD AIRHelen Kapalos has had her fair share of on screen gaffes this year, like calling f ormer Sunrise host Melissa Doyle Melanie, but this one takes the cake. Watch how the Today Tonight host struggles to keep her composure as producers leave her high and dry on air.Lesson learned Always be readyThis poor news anchor just couldnt get it together. Shes fumbling over her words flipping through papers trying to find the right information and constantly apologizing for not being prepared and in order. Can you imagine your boss or a speaker doing this during a meeting/presentation? Or what if you did this while attempting to sell a new product or initiative to a potential client?Always being organized and prepared is crucial to 1) a productive and efficient workforce/company and 2) success in general. Also, when watching the video you will notice no one stepped in to assist the anchor. Another lesson we can take away here is that you need to make sure youre prepared and not depend on others. At the end of the day, youre an employee who has a specific role to fill in your co mpany. Even if youre a part of the team, as long as you have your assignments/duties completed youve done your part.

Effective Meetings for Accounting Managers

Effective Meetings for Accounting ManagersEffective Meetings for Accounting ManagersEven with all the phone calls and emails you exchange during the work day, accounting managers can still run effective meetings with their finance and accounting department. In-person meetings are valuable ways to share information, collaborate with other departments, offer leadership training and get all hands on deck to handle rising business demands. So your team can focus on high-priority tasks for the business, youll need to keep staff meetings to a minimum in terms of frequency and time. More than that, meetings should help you boost productivity in the workplace, rather than the opposite.Heres how to make effective face-to-face meetings happen in the finance and accounting worldRe-examine the routineJust because you have a staff meeting every Monday morning doesnt mean you should have one. If youre having difficulty creating a meaningful agenda, or your finance and accounting team spends more ti me chatting (or staring out the window), you may need to dial back the frequency of some standing meetings. Consider whether memos, group emails, briefing reports, or collaborative file-sharing solutions would be sufficient for sharing information that otherwise would be deckblatted in a meeting or conference call. Think of how you can change your next business meeting so no one thinks of it as a waste of time.Be selective when sending invitationsDoes every person on the list of attendees need to be present? People are often invited to meetings as a matter of courtesy. However, if someone doesnt have a stake in the majority of items on the agenda, make clear that his or her attendance is optional. A lengthy participant list - and extensive agenda - are indicators you may be trying to cover too much ground in a single meeting. For some discussions, consider holding shorter, more strategic sessions with key personnel only. Are you reading this because youd like to become an accountin g manager? Read So You Want to Be an Accounting Manager? for the duties and expectations.Provide some prepBuild your presentation skills, and send information to invitees in advance of the meeting so everyone knows the purpose for getting together and the topics to be covered. Attendees should receive, at minimum, high-level agendas to review and comment on prior to the session. If possible, include any materials - such as a slide deck or report - that you intend to use during the meeting. By letting participants do their homework before convening, youll be able to move through essential information more quickly and leave more time for discussion.Set aside time for fresh thinkingAnother strategy to make meetings matter more is to leave time at the end of some sessions for team members to share new ideas and insights or to brainstorm on how to solve problems or increase efficiency at the firm. Just dont let it drag on too long.A Robert Half survey found that the amount of time, on average, finance leaders spend in meetings is 24 percent, and 21 percent of that time is wasted. So, as an accounting manager, youll be wise to keep staff meetings brief, to the point, and as productive as possible. Doing so could have a positive impact on your firms overall productivity and competitive edge. Tags

4 Small Ways Anyone Can Practice Self-Care on a Regular Basis

4 Small Ways Anyone Can Practice Self-Care on a Regular Basis4 Small Ways Anyone Can Practice Self-Care on a Regular BasisSelf-care. Youve probably heard of it, but are you actually practicing it? If youre skeptical, I get it. In a world of non-stop emails, endless opportunity, and other peoples hustle all over the internet, its easier said than done. And lets face it Many of the people who preach about self-care seem to be yoga bunnies without bills to pay.But self-care isnt just another social media trend- its a mindset. And trust me when I say its key to building a successful career you love, no matter your situation. And, you dont have to quit your job or completely shift your routine to get started today. 1. platzset an Email Curfew (and Stick to It)My boyfriend and I recently instated a rule that I love From 8 PM onwards, we dont check or reply to any work emails. No excuses. No exceptions. Instead, we talk to each other (crazy, I know). At first, it wasnt easy, and the struggle to not get back to people right away and be productive at all hours is real. But, having this curfew has helped me sleep better and given me a point of distinction between my working day, my commute, and my personal time. At 8 PM, my working life ends, and my personal time commences. Try it. And if you want to take it to a whole new level? Try a nightly technology curfew, too. 2. Limit Work Talk to WeekdaysHow much unpaid overtime are you doing? And I dont just mean getting to work early and leaving late, but mental overtime? How much time do you spend thinking and talking and worrying about your day job? Because- real talk- youre not being paid a cent for that time. Not a single cent. My rule is simple I dont talk about my day job on the weekends. If my mind goes there, fine, but I dont bring it up in conversations. Instead, I talk about ideas, articles Ive read, things thatre inspiring me, things Im excited about. Not only does banning work talk allow you to take back some contro l from your work life, but it leaves you motivated and refreshed come Monday morning.3. Work on Your Identity Outside of WorkThis is a lesson I recently learned and cant preach enough To have a healthy approach to your work, you need to work on your identity outside of work. (FYI, the same rules apply to romantic relationships, and your career is no different.) But how, I hear you ask?Start by paying attention to what you pay attention to- you know, outside of work. Think about what you loved doing when you were a kid, and work back from there. For example, being Brazilian, Im a huge samba lover- and I love singing and dancing (badly) to it. It may sound simple, but my time spent enjoying samba is mine and mine alone. Its so far removed from my work, and it reminds me that theres a whole world out there- a world away from the constraints of my desk.4. Be Less Harsh on YourselfI know youre probably freaking out about that comment you said to your co-worker, or that slipup you made in your presentation at the brde company meeting, or that deadline you missed. But if you want to make it in your career (without burning out), you need to let it go. Why? Because nobody (and I mean nobody) is watching anywhere near as closely as you think. Theyre just not. Theyre way too busy worrying about themselves.Heres a pep talk Be less harsh on yourself. Start talking to yourself as a coach, not a commentator. Replace thoughts like, Wait, is that comment I just made really stupid? with confidence-boosting thoughts like, Great job speaking up in that meetingA healthy career requires self-kindness- lots of it. And if you want to reach success in the future, these habits will get you there the right way. This article was originally published on Biancabass.com. It has been republished here with permission.

Top Questions to Ask in an Interview, According to a Hiring Manager

Top Questions to Ask in an Interview, According to a Hiring Manager Top Questions to Ask in an Interview, According to a Hiring Manager Successful interviews aren’t just about having the right answers. They are about asking the right questions. As an interviewer , being asked good questions keeps me energized, engaged and interested in the person I am meeting. When I hear a question, I think about my answer and I also anticipate what might have motivated someone to ask that and what it says about them â€" is their question insightful and considered or could they have perhaps done more to prepare?   What do your questions say about you? The candidates I recommend we hire, are those who clearly show me that they want to be here; they are as engaged and committed to the interview process as I am. Often, it isn’t about being the smartest or most qualified applicant, though that can, of course, be a plus.   My single biggest piece of advice ? Don’t forget to make the interview work for you. Remember, it’s your window to sell yourself and to gather as much information as you can, so that you can make a smart career decision based on what you hear.   My recommendation is to prepare five questions and ask three during the interview . Here are some sample questions that showcase you have come prepared and help you learn about the company and interviewer: You might get a ‘flat’ or vanilla canned response â€" if you do, that says a lot. If you hear a passionate response that truly aligns with your own values e.g.: the company’s attitude towards diversity and inclusion or the company’s commitment to employees and respect for the individual, take it as a sign that you’re onto a good thing. Good question, but the interviewer may want to keep their cards close to their chest on this one. Take a punt at what the challenge might be, based on the research you have done into the company and the competitive landscape. Ask this â€" and be prepared to have this question re-directed at you. You’ve obviously given your suitability to the role some thought, so here’s your first opportunity to shine. A responsible and very smart open question that covers a lot of ground. You’re inadvertently asking about how employees are treated, internal processes, future opportunities for promotion. The answer to this will tell you a lot. While it may seem to be a dangerous question, every company has had to deal with things not going its way at some point. The answer to this will tell you a lot about the company culture. Those in ‘steady state’ businesses may react like they have something to hide. Listen for positive responses â€" anecdotes about transformation, agility and flexibility. A key question. You’ll have gone into the interview asking yourself whether your working style is a good fit with your potential future employer and colleagues. Listen out for a sense of this person’s working style and see if it aligns with yours. For insight into what will be expected of you, ask this. A variation on a theme here is ‘What would you like to see from this role in the first 30,60, 90 days?’. Or be bolder and ask ‘What would you like to see from me in the first 30, 60, 90 days?’ â€" I’m likely to take it as proactive, not presumptuous. Lovely. Let’s get down to business. A good back up question if you haven’t got much out of the response to the previous question. Y ou may not get much back, but it’s a brave question that acknowledges that no interview is a one-horse race. And if it is, you’re either brilliant or it’s a red flag! A good shoo-in to showcase your competitive investigations. Be prepared to give your answer and have a discussion on the wider trends in the industry. Don’t just walk away at the end of it all or accept a generic ‘we’ll be in touch’. Try to get a sense of what the next steps are â€" who you might hear from and when. 12 Key Updates to Your LinkedIn Profile

12 Key Updates to Your LinkedIn Profile 12 Key Updates to Your LinkedIn Profile 2As LinkedIn is one of the biggest and most utilized professional tools, keeping your profile up to date and relevant is essential. The millions of users, including recruiters, are constantly searching and viewing profiles to expand their network, as well as seek out professionals for open jobs. Since LinkedIn is such a great personal branding tool, making updates to your LinkedIn profile is important to keep your profile searchable in Google and interesting and engaging to catch a recruiter’s eye. If you are making updates to your LinkedIn profile for the new year, consider the below tips. Here are 12 key updates to your LinkedIn profile: Update your photo. The first thing many people see on any social media is a persons profile picture. If you have been using the same picture for years, the beginning of the year is a great time to update it. With job searching coming back strong in January, getting a new professional photo can help catch the attention of busy recruiters. Refresh experience. There is no doubt that over the past year you have gained professional experience and skills. Use the new year to update your skills lists and your professional experience. Or, if you have much of this already updated, consider filling in some of the finer details like exact dates and titles. Add recent accomplishments, honors, and awards. Perhaps you recently landed a huge client at your current job, or a yearlong project was completed. Adding accomplishments, honors, and awards is a great way to elevate your profile, as well as showcase some of your best professional successes to those viewing your profile. Update volunteer work. Many people use volunteering not only to give back to society, but also to gain skills and experience in interesting and new roles. Don’t skip adding your volunteer work to LinkedIn. Volunteering will not only speak of your character, but help to fill in gaps in employment and showcase your desire to develop personally and professionally. Add a website. While not everyone is going to have an outside website, if you do, make sure to add it to your profile. Adding a website is particularly important for those in professions where portfolios and work samples are highly desired, such as freelancers. Join groups and be active. Updates to your LinkedIn profile will only go so far if you don’t use it. Join interesting and professionally related LinkedIn groups as a way to connect with others and learn more about your current or desired industry. Remember to remain semi-active in these groups by interacting with others and starting discussions. Make your headline stand out. Other than your profile picture, your headline is going to be what the world sees when they find your profile. Make it count! Although short, you can create a headline that summarizes your personal brand. Seek recommendations and endorsements. This doesn’t mean to reach out and contact everyone you know for a recommendation or endorsement on LinkedIn. Ask people you have worked with recently or who have offered up recent praise specific to your work. Asking for a recommendation or endorsement is similar to asking for a letter of reference but on a digital platform. Make use of the summary space. When crafting your summary, try to keep in under two or three paragraphs. Use this space to communicate your experience and skills, as well as your professional goals and aspirations. Make it relevant to professional readers. Add numbers. If your profile is already up to date, consider adding numbers to quantify your experience. Providing numbers gives a concise snapshot of your professional achievements and exactly what you can do in relation to a companys organizational needs. Follow new people and employers. To maximize LinkedIn, consider following your dream employers and influential people in your industry. Not only will it help you stay current on news and trends, it is another fantastic way of connecting with others who are interested in the same areas that you are. Clean it up. Last, but certainly not least, clean your profile of any old information or data you may have forgotten about. If there are irrelevant skills, experience, buzzwords, or groups, consider removing them to provide viewers with a clean and relevant snapshot of who you are. You made it through four (or more) years of school and have a brand-new, freshly printed diploma to show for it. But even better than that, you have your first official job offer signed, sealed, and delivered. And it's a job you're actually excited to start! Consider yourself among the lucky. Although the economy and subsequently, the job market has improved over the past few years, many recent college graduates still struggle to secure full-time jobs in their field of study. Don't head into the 'real world' blind arm yourself with this career advice. It has everything you need to kickstart your professional life. Prepare for your first day at your new job. You remember all-too-well how important it was to make the right first impression during each job interview. Similarly, creating a great first impression with your new colleagues is incredibly important and requires some careful preparation on your part. Click on the following link for a list of things to do before your first day at work to ensure your first job will be a success. Create a plan for your first 90 days on the job. Employers often consider a new hire's first 90 days at the company to be an extension of the interview process, and with good reason. Your manager is still feeling you out, and you're probably doing the same, making sure this hiring decision was the right move for everyone involved. While some companies provide an orientation program to set their new employees up for success, don't assume you'll receive such support. Instead, take matters into your own hands by creating your own 90-day plan. Create a list of things you can do during your first week, month, and 90 days on the job that will set you up for success. Click on the following link to view our suggested 90-day plan for new employees. Reset your expectations for your entry-level position. You're excited to join the workforce and take the first step towards your dream job, and that's a good thing. But make sure you enter this entry-level job with realistic expectations. Click on the following link to learn what you can expect from your first job out of college and how you can make the most of this experience. Continue to learn in and out of the office. The fastest way to lose your edge, both in and out of the workplace, is to stop learning. Sure, after your last semester of finals, presentations, term papers, and group projects, you may be ready to burn your library card. It's perfectly natural to feel a bit burnt out. However, after you've given yourself a break and settled into your new job role and routine, find ways to continue your professional development in and out of the office. For instance, you may want to start scouting for the right mentor or sign up for an online course through sites like Coursera, Lynda.com, edX, or Skillshare. If you're looking for other cheap ways to supplement your on-the-job training, check out this list of highly-recommended career development books. Invest in your professional network. You already landed a job, so why the emphasis on networking? Well, a strong professional network doesn't just help you find and land an entry-level position. In fact, the most successful professionals are often excellent networkers. Networking will help you build and sharpen your skills, stay on top of industry trends and technologies, find the right mentor, and keep an eye on the job market, should you suddenly find yourself unemployed or desperate to jump ship. Start building a network of valuable contacts by getting involved in your alma mater's alumni events, joining relevant LinkedIn groups online, and finding other face-to-face opportunities through relevant professional associations, Meetup groups, and trade shows. Start a brag book of your work accomplishments. If you want to get ahead in your career, you have to be comfortable speaking about your job skills and the value you bring to an employer. Prepare for these future conversations by tracking your work accomplishments from the very start of your career in a brag book. A brag book, also known as a wins journal, is an uncomplicated job-search tool that allows you to keep track of all your major contributions and accomplishments over the course of your career. This ongoing record of your professional achievements will not only help you prepare for your annual performance review and future salary negotiation conversations, but it will also make it easier to update your entry-level resume when you're ready to conduct another job search. This is how coffee is impacting your gut health which is important

This is how coffee is impacting your gut health which is important This is how coffee is impacting your gut health which is important So what’s the consensus on a steady java diet? Ladders conceded its cultural importance, but ultimately championed tea as a healthier source for both focus and alertness. With the new pharmaceutical  golden child- gut bacteria entering the dialectic, we toss another log into the fire of ambiguity.Coffee and the microbiomeIn conjunction with a study highlighting the numerous and promising effects of gut bacteria on mental health, Bustle recently expounded upon the conversation sweeping the medical world. They suggest coffee to lead to a more diverse bacterial microbiome in long term drinkers. Diversity is a key component of a healthy gut. Gut bacteria better enables us to absorb and store vital nutrients. Additionally, a healthy gut biome trains our immune system and regulates energy balance.Because the average life-span of a bacterium in your microbiome is so brief (roughly twenty minutes), every single thing you ingest is instrumental in altering its population. Diet doesn’t act a lone, or even most principally. The amount of sleep you receive each night plays a crucial part as does your degree of exercise.  Problem is, even in unison, it’s a case by case situation.Limiting our scope to just coffee at the present, we have to take pre-existing medical conditions into account. If you already suffer from gastral irregularities, coffee is likely to exasperate them. Moreover, the acid found in coffee decimates the lining of the stomach, causing some drinkers to develop ulcers or gastritis.Dr. Khodadadian advises victims of Chron’s disease and irritable bowel syndrome not to drink coffee period. Even with this distinction in place, there is no blanket rule. Genes, age and an array of other biological factors play a role in the severity of affect coffee as on your overall health.Of course, in excess, it’s negative across the board, but if you already have a healthy gut and you drink in moderation the beverage can produce positive effects on gut health.

Why Small Businesses Need Employee Performance Reviews

Why Small Businesses Need Employee Performance Reviews Why Small Businesses Need Employee Performance Reviews Why Small Businesses Need Employee Performance Reviews Berkowitz, Esq. If youre like most small business entrepreneurs, you are a mega-multi-tasker:part salesperson, part manager, part accountant and even part parent. Without a formal human resources department, many small businesses rely on their owner to make decisions about hiring, firing and all employment matters in between. And as any HR professional will tell you, dealing with personnel problems can take more than part of your time it can be all-consuming. That makes it all the more important to take a pro-active approach in managing employee development with effective performance reviews. Avoiding the Issue Can Become the Issue Its easy as a small business owner to let performance problems slide (Robert is having marital problems or Julia just had a baby.) In other cases, a boss may assume that the casual conversation she had in the break room with an underperforming worker about picking up the pace was enough to address the issue. After all, one of the advantages of working for a smaller company is the company culture- the close-knit environment and personal interaction between boss and employees. Some small business owners may wish to avoid the employment formalities of bigger corporations such as written reviews or probationary periods out of concern that such procedures would ruin the family-like atmosphere of the workplace. But the desire to keep things friendly and personal can go too far. If a boss makes employment decisions based on personal feelings, he or she risks violating the law by treating employees inconsistently (see below.) Remember, it is possible to maintain the collegial work environment of a small business while following important legal issues. Doing so will be good for any company big or small. It will also help focus employee development over time. Be Sure to Document Employment Problems By not documenting an employees performance problems and the steps taken to inform the employee about them, its almost as if they never happened. Avoiding the conversation not only jeopardizesemployee development but can quickly create tension in a small workplace as other workers pick up the slack from the underperformer. How should a business owner address an employees performance problems? Have a face-to-face meeting with the employee to discuss the issue. Include a second person at the meeting if possible such as the employee who handles HR matters. Document in writing what was discussed at the meeting, including the type of expected improvements, a timeline for review of the employees performance and consequences if the employee does not meet performance goals. If youre considering employee termination, carefully assess whether the employee needs additional training or support to help perform the job. Then, have the employee sign the document. A signature should not indicate that the employee agrees with the assessment, only that he or she has been informed of the issue. Allow the employee to submit a rebuttal which also becomes part of his or her file. Be sure to revisit the employees performance as scheduled and hold the employee to the consequences if he or she has not met performance goals. Be Consistent with Employee Evaluations Take care to treat all employees the same with regard to leave, pay, discipline and other employment issues, regardless of what you may know about their personal lives. For example, if you discipline a male salesperson for failing to make his quota, you must similarly discipline a female salesperson even though you know she is a single parent whose performance issues are likely a result of childcare problems. As much as you might want to make exceptions for employees because of their personal situations, doing so can create the appearance of unlawful special treatment. The laws regarding employment require that employers treat employees equally with respect to race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy), national origin, age (40 or older), disability or genetic information. Although it is true that some employees are entitled to workplace accommodations to help them perform their jobs, the rulesgoverning how and when an accommodation is due are detailed and specific. Before making a workplace exception with respect to discipline, benefits or other work policies, it is a good idea to talk to an employment lawyer, or contact one of the EEOCs small business liaisons with specific questions. 13 Best (and Worst) Corporate Anthems Youll Wish You Never Heard

13 Best (and Worst) Corporate Anthems Youll Wish You Never Heard 13 Best (and Worst) Corporate Anthems Youll Wish You Never Heard Corporate anthems are nothing new. In fact, theres more of them than you probably realize. But to see the whole picture, we must go back to the era of the “company man”. Back then, a corporation was as much a caretaker as an  employer. Companies would provide a pension and perhaps also a stipend for widows. The employee would, in turn, give his lifelong allegiance. In more recent times, the corporate anthem became most commonly associated with 1980s Japanese corporate culture. This gruelling era - having given rise to the term karoshi for “death by overworking” - led employees to unquestioning loyalty, utmost dedication and devotion to employers. According to a 1985 research paper on the psychological impact of Japanese company songs on employees, it was not uncommon to see “plant workers as well as office employees start their day with the company song, exercise with it during the short mid-day recess, and even finish their work with the company song.” After so many global economic crises, one would think that cynicism about capitalism and job security would have sent the corporate anthem to the scrapyard of history. There may be very few companies to start their day with a merry song, but a surprising number of modern-day corporations still keep commissioning company songs. All ears? We’ve rounded up some of the most powerful corporate anthems from across the globe. Lets hear and see what these songs are like! 1. KPMG International The accounting behemoth KPMG didn’t have to do much to make their song go viral in 2001. Praising its ultimate potency, the soulful power ballad Global Strategy was a curious attempt at aural branding that led to several parodic covers of the anthem. More than a decade later, KPMG came with a far more appealing monumental orchestra piece  One Firm Anthem.  Watch out for the persuasive commentary that’s just too hard to resist. We can see ourselves as soloists, or, we can imagine the possibilities when we all perform as one. We create, we innovate / We pass the ones that are late. 2. Starbucks The 2005 Starbucks awards ceremony did the best to make it clear that writing a name on a coffee cup is no easy job. Performed on the conference by Jefferson Starbucks, a band that starred a number of company’s high up executives, We Built This Starbucks  will make you understand what it took to construct a coffee takeaway spot in your neigborhood. Knee-deep in the mocha, making coffee right /  So many partners, working late at night. 3. Apple We Are Apple (Leading the Way) was first used during the Macintosh rollout in January  1984. The song was supposed to act as a bit of a diversion between product announcements and energise the audience before the arrival of the new line of Lisa computer systems. However, we can comfortably imagine having it introduce every keynote conference or as a quirky iPhone ringtone. And now look ahead / with the dreams yet to come / lifting our goals to the sky. 4. Fujitsu Ah, Fujitsu! Tomorrow is our goal!  is a solid corporate song - big budget, where no expense has been spared, from the detailed orchestration to the captivating voice of one of Japans best-loved jazz singers, Martha Miyake. Lets make a bond from heart to heart throughout human race /  An unseen power, now in our grasp, can even conquer space. 5. Facebook Whether you believe it or not, Thank You Facebook Song  is just an earnest tribute to a corporation whose mission is to foster meaningful connection around the globe. Its makers claim they spent “very little money on the video because nearly everyone involved donated their time, energy and services to the project.” Show Photos of who we know and what makes us happy /  Im taggin you, youre taggin me and were makin history, yeah! 6. Ernst Young The accounting firm chose a different path and came up with a gospel cover of Edwin Hawkins Singers Oh, Happy Day. Like the original, Ernst Youngs Oh, Happy Day brims with happiness and enthusiasm that was undeniably present during the companys Recruitment Days back in 2011. And if you havent had enough of the corporate happiness, dont forget to check out another accounting hit of theirs titled EY EY Ernst Young. When Ernst Young / Showed me a better way / Oh yes it was a happy day! Knowledge, proactive, entrepreneurial, continuous improvement! 7. PriceWaterhouseCoopers As it happens, PriceWaterhouseCoopers didnt leave anything up to chance and came up with Downright Global, a groovy rap that stems from the deepest roots of street music. On the other hand, Your Worlds Our People is a sweet, emotional tune with the goal to spread the gospel to every corner of the world. Hallelujah! Innovation, imagination / Fascination, total global integration / PriceWaterhouseCoopers, PWC! PriceWaterhouseCoopers sounding like a band / we dont sell no dogma / What weve got is skill   8. McKinsey Company The consulting firm goes Bollywood in saluting itself in a There is a Dream masterpiece. Or rather an Asian nightmare? Well leave it up to you to decide. Anyway, be careful with this song. Chances are Martin Luther Kings turning in his grave when he hears it. Na na naaaa na ni na-na-na ni na-na-na ni na. / Na na naaaa na ni na-na-na ni na-na-na ni na. 9. Symantec Thought combining antivirus technology with motivational soul music was impossible? And what about the one about CPUs and crossbar switches? No, were not kidding. The Octane workstation deserved a song. Nixon Peabody Created in celebration of Nixon Peabody’s Fortune 100 ‘Best Places to Work’ recognition and meant for internal use only, the cheesy 80s-styled party jam rip off Everybody’s A Winner At Nixon Peabody  is sure to get you up and dancing as soon as you hear that Tina Turner kick off the celebration. The best to work with /  the best to work for / thats all we ever ever want to be. https://abovethelaw.com/uploads/2007/08/Nixon-Peabody.wmv.mp3 12. IBM OK, lets now shake off all you think of contemporary corporate anthems and time travel a bit to see what it was originally like to sing a song about your company. Back in the days  - in the first half of the 20th century  - corporate songs were meant to be sung on daily basis and with all solemnity. And thats what was happening at the beginnings of IBM: “For 37 years, the gatherings and conventions of our IBM workers have expressed in happy songs the fine spirit of loyal cooperation of good fellowship which has promoted the signal success of our great IBM Corporation in its truly International Service for the betterment of business and benefit to mankind.” And then Harry Evans, a man who “loved to sing and enjoyed setting his own lyrics to popular songs” took it to another level in 1925. His love for singing was so contagious that he literally made the whole IBM sing: “If Watson sang, IBM would sing. As with the dress code, Watson did not order IBM to sing. That bit of corporate culture started with Harry Evans. Outgoing, attention-seeking, good-natured, wired with energy and shorter than every other man in the room, Evans was always the guy with a  joke, or the guy willing to laugh at a joke. Watson liked him and promoted him.” The IBM songbook Evans  went on to print a booklet of his IBM songs to make it easier for the employees to sing them at company sales conventions and other gatherings.  The songbook, a thin paperback volume of 54 pages, entitled Songs of the IBM Fellowship Songs of International Business Machines Corporation served as a bible that packed all company songs. The songbook included masterpieces such as  â€œMarch On With IBM”, “To Our I.B.M. Girls” or “Our Presidents Motto: THINK”.  If you want to get a gist of what the music sounded like, check out a tinny recording of Ever Onwards and  Hail to the IBM. Ever onward Ever onward! / Were bound for the top to never fall! / Right here and now we thankfully / Pledge sincerest loyalty / To the corporation thats the best of all! https://www.ibm.com/ibm/history/exhibits/music/wav/everonward.wav Your ties of friendship cannot sever / Your glory time will never stem / We will toast a name that lives forever / Hail to the IBM! http://www-03.ibm.com/ibm/history/exhibits/music/wav/hailtoibm.wav 13. Bonus track: The Gazprom Song Listen up, folks! Heres a real treat. A hidden treasure from the depths of the Internet. Check out this catchy tune about Gazprom, the Russian energy giant and - as this song makes quite clear - something of a national saviour. Infused with authentic Russian style, this feel-good anthem was composed and performed by Vladimir Tumayev, director of a Gazproms subsidiary called Spetsgazavtotrans. Cheers! Lets drink to you, lets drink to us / Lets drink to all the Russian gas / For those extracting the new sun / From down beneath the ground. Worst corporate anthems? Theres more of them Wow. That was quite a ride, to say the least! The festival of the unique genre of corporate music is coming to a close. But dont get me wrong. There are many more undiscovered gems that this article couldnt hold.   Its not always companies that commission these masterpieces. Sometimes songs and dances get created by thankful employees  - or the frustrated ones. Anything can happen, really. You can get fired (or a pay rise),  screw up (or finish) a demanding project.  So whatever your career stage, theres always a reason to sing or dance your heart out for something that truly matters to you. Just dont miss. Youre sure going to have a blast! Share Your Feedback or Ideas in the Comments!

15 Tips on How to Write a Great Resume

15 Tips on How to Write a Great Resume 15 Tips on How to Write a Great Resume Employers usually make a split-second decision about whether to contact you when they first see your resume. It is essential to write a great resume to make an outstanding first impression. What makes a great resume? Check out these  resume tips  collected from 15 top career experts. 1. The first 10 seconds count Brian Shoicket, university community programs lead at Uncubed, says recruiters only spend about 10 seconds looking at each resume- so it is crucial to make your resume concise, structured, and specific. Focus on resume keywords that recruiters, hiring managers, and applicant tracking systems look for by using a resume analysis tool such as Jobscan. Include as many of the keywords from the job posting on your resume as you can. 2. Link your resume to your internet presence Nancy Range Anderson is president of Blackbird Learning Associates and author of  the book Job Search for Moms. She recommends adding links to the websites of your past employers; this way, hiring managers can see what kind of work you have done, even if they are not familiar with the companies you have worked for. Additionally, you should include a link to your LinkedIn profile in your resumes contact information section. Social media is becoming an increasingly important part of the job search. 3. Choose your prospective employers carefully Meg Guiseppi is the CEO of Executive Career Brand, personal branding expert of Job-Hunt.org, and author of numerous ebooks. She advises job seekers to research potential employers thoroughly before writing their resumes. Start by choosing 10 to 15 employers of interest. Read about their missions, activities, and challenges, and decide how your background and skills make you a good candidate to work for them. Then tailor your application materials accordingly. 4. Mention your most important qualifications in your cover letter Lori Derming of Derming Consulting says a strong cover letter helps you make a good first impression.   Your cover letter should demonstrate your interest in the role, and make it clear why you would be a good fit. Mention at least three of the qualities specified in the job description, and explain how you have demonstrated these qualities. Be as specific as possible. 5.  Provide a summary John Scott, a career advocate at Career Network, recommended including a resume summary if you have been working in your target field for more than five years. A career summary should be brief, and describe the skills and experiences most relevant to the job for which you are applying. It should be specific to you- if its vague enough that it could apply to anyone in your field, it doesnt provide any benefit. If you are new to a field, or even just new to the workforce, then a career summary is not necessary. And no matter how long youve been working, skip the resume objective entirely. 6. Do your homework Shahrzad Arasteh is a holistic career counselor, speaker, and author of Nourish Your Career. She emphasizes the importance of researching the positions for which you are applying. Specifically, she recommends trying to speak to current or former employees to learn about the company and the position. Try to find out how your target job fits into the overall operations of the organization. This will help you evaluate whether you are a good fit for the job, and provide direction for tailoring your resume. One of the most important resume tips is the fact that length doesnt make your resume better- relevance does. 7. Focus on the future, not the past Lisa Rangel of Chameleon Resumes says that the purpose of your resume is to show potential employers what you can help them achieve in the future, not merely a summary of things you have done in the past. Highlight the valuable things you can accomplish in your target position. Demonstrate your value using accomplishment statements to show how you can benefit a company. 8. Be straightforward on your resume Susan Heathfield is a human resources expert at About.com. Her best resume tip is that honesty is the best policy; glossing over inconvenient truths can make recruiters wary. For example, sometimes job seekers list the university they attended and hope employers will assume they graduated. Or they try to hide periods of unemployment by listing only the years of their employment dates, instead of months and years. These tactics make you look less than honest. Be clear about any gaps in employment, and dont try to inflate your experience. She also recommends being clear about how your previous roles have prepared you for your target job. Make it easy for a hiring manager to see how your experience is valuable and relevant. 9. Ask family and friends for advice Robin Richards, chairman and CEO of CareerArc, recommends seeking the advice of family, friends, and co-workers. Ask your friends, colleagues, and relatives to read your resume and offer constructive criticism. Career experts or not, those close to you can offer useful resume tips because theyre familiar with your accomplishments. They may even point out accomplishments that you had taken for granted. 10. Make your online presence professional and consistent Sara Sutton Fell, founder and CEO of FlexJobs, offers a high-tech resume tip. Because employers will search for you online, make yourself easy to find, and make your online presence as professional as possible. Sara recommends posting an updated version of your resume online. Make sure your online presence is consistent; the information on your LinkedIn and other social media accounts should match, and align the resume you post online. You do not have to post every detail everywhere, but obvious discrepancies will raise a red flag. If you do not already have one, create an About.me page. You could even start a blog related to your field. 11. Targeted information Miriam Salpeter, speaker and coach at Keppie Careers and author of Social Networking for Career Success, says  every item on your resume should be written with your target job in mind. Think about how everything you have done in your career is relevant to the job for which you are applying. If it isnt relevant, it doesnt belong. Again, research is essential. The more you know about a prospective employer, the better you can convey how you would be an asset to them. 12. Brevity Jay Martin, founder and chairman of JobSerf, says your resume should be no longer than two pages. If you have seven or fewer years of experience in the workforce, then your resume should only be one page. Those with lots of professional experience can create detailed LinkedIn profiles chronicling their careers, but resumes should always be concise. 13. Immerse yourself in your new professional field Janet Scarborough Civitelli, Ph.D., is a career coach at VocationVillage.com and author of Help Me Find a Career: Strategies to Choose Work You Will Love. She says that, when changing careers, it is important to immerse yourself in your new field even before you begin applying for jobs. This may include volunteer work, taking classes, or joining a professional association. Showing that you have familiarity and experience with your new field is critical. 14. Write a mini business plan Nick Corcodilos is host of Ask The Headhunter and author of Fearless Job Hunting. He recommends writing a mini business plan containing your ideas about what you would do if hired at your target job.   Present this to the hiring manager directly. Dont send it off to the companys generic human resources email address. If you do not know the manager, initiate contact with him or her before submitting your business plan. This approach forces you to network, which is an important part of career success. 15. Dont allow mistakes Lisa Quast is the founder of Career Woman, Inc.  and author of numerous books, including her latest, Secrets of a Hiring Manager Turned Career Coach: A Foolproof Guide to Getting the Job You Want- Every Time.  She emphasizes the importance of having a mistake-free resume. If your resume has errors, its reasonable for employers to conclude that your work will, too. Receive instant analysis of your great new resume with Jobscan:

How to Communicate More Clearly With Your Boss - The Muse

How to Communicate More Clearly With Your Boss - The Muse How to Communicate More Clearly With Your Boss The perfect boss is a mind reader. They know how you’re feeling and what you’re thinking at any given time, and so they adjust how they treat you and what they assign you accordingly. You’d probably agree with that statement, right? But the reality is that managers don’t have this superpower- no one does. However, communicating more clearly- the real-life fix to not working with mind readers- is something you can do in your office. This is what we call “managing up.” And if that term scares you or seems impossible in your situation, we’ve discovered the best method to try it out. In a recent article, Quartz writer Khe Hy talks about how his boss’ vague communication stressed him out on a daily basis. So, he decided to take matters into his own hands- with one simple email: Every Friday afternoon, I’d send my boss a short email with three categories: · The work I had completed that week · What I was working on, including any deadlines that may have shifted or obstacles I’d encountered · What I was waiting on- that is, tasks that I’d completed, but require sign-off from my boss or contributions from someone else Rather than wait for his manager to guess what he needed from them, he proactively put all that information in front of them so they could easily get back to him with a response, sign-off, or edit. It also ensured his boss was well aware of where he stood in meeting deadlines. But most importantly, this short email inadvertently tells his boss how he’s getting along mentally and emotionally- for example, if he communicates the same obstacles every week, it opens the door for a deeper discussion about shifting strategies or extending deadlines that’ll relieve some of that stress. The real kicker? Writing it up only takes Hy 15 minutes (and probably takes his manager less time to read). Sending this kind of message may seem redundant, but it’s a great way to keep your boss up-to-speed on what you’re working on so that they can manage you effectively- and encourages them to be open with you on what they’re working on, too. Even better, highlighting your accomplishments is the first step toward proving you’re worthy of a raise or promotion down the road. Even if an email isn’t the right strategy for your team, one thing you can take away from this is the importance of communicating with the people you work with. So often our frustrations stem from assuming someone knows something they don’t- which is why it never hurts to reach out to a team member when you could use a hand (rather than hope they’ll notice you’re struggling and offer to help out), or update them if you’re running behind (so they know when to expect a final product), or simply ask if communicating differently (such as emailing weekly progress reports rather than meeting every Monday) might be more effective. If you make communicating (like really communicating) a part of your routine, you’ll find that hoping your co-workers become mind readers won’t be so high on your wish list.
