5 Reasons to Give Your Creative Biz a Break
5 Reasons to Give Your Creative Biz a Break Im on vacay until 10/15, but my blogs still hard at work. Enjoy this post from Patty of The Plaid Cupcake! The trick is to keep breathing by farouche Whatâs the one single tool most critical to your creative biz? Imagine that tool is suddenly gone, broken, or unavailable to you. Maybe it simply wore out; maybe you left it on the subway; or God forbid you lost it during a flood, earthquake or mudslide (these days, you certainly have your pick). A small, but critical part of my sewing machine recently made the dreaded âka-plunkâ sound that I knew right away meant trouble. Without my sewing machine,my business comes to a stand still. At the time I had four custom orders to get out the door, plus an upcoming craft fair that I was just starting to ramp up production on. Immediately I felt PANIC! DREAD! The most critical tool that fuels my creative mojo was dead. First step? Contact all of those customers who had placed a custom order and explain the situation. Fortunately for me, they were all very understanding. Next, I took down all of the items on my site that were âmade to orderâ so that if anybodywent on to my site, they only had the option of purchasing items that were ready-to-ship. I also ordered the replacement part from TWO different sources (read my blog post for a fun take on my field trip to the repair shop!) After putting the âemergency planâ in place, I went from feelings of helplessness and worry to almost feeling a âzenâ state of mind. Over the ten days my machine was out of commission, I felt calmer, and oddly more confident. I had come face-to-face with one of the utmost worst things that could happen to my business, and wound up thriving from it. So go ahead. I dare you. Quit the biz âcold-turkeyâ for a week, and see what happens. I donât necessarily recommend the route I went by having your most critical tool break down- but if it does, put your contingency plan into place and then take a deep breath. Or, take your creative tools and put them behind lock and key for a week (and hand the key to a trusted friend!) Here are five reasons why: 1) Chill, pickle! If youâre like me, you live and breathe your business. When you wake up, when youâre in the shower, and even when you try to ârelax.â Take a week and let your mind mellow and chill out. Iâve found some of my best ideas come when Iâm not trying. 2) Brush the dust off the hobby you dropped when you made your creative endeavor a real business. Break out the ukulele! Attend a Pilates class. For me, it was knitting and jogging â" two things I hadnât done in months. I think we all need interests that are just for fun and non-business related. 3) Cross off that to-do list. If you find going cold-turkey is too hard and youâre really itching to be productive, how about all that stuff that youâll âget around toâ someday? Fix your website, write that blog post, stock up on supplies, and get your finances in order! 4) Rekindle the romance. No, not with your significant other! With your craft. We all know the expression âdistance makes the heart grow fonder.â Sometimes we becomes so entrenched in the business aspects of our creative endeavors, we forget why we loved it in the first place. Some time away can make you remember what makes your creativity so special. 5) Become a better business person by knowing you can handle a semi-crisis. Often we get lulled into thinking the more and more we practice our craft, the better. But doing well in the face of adversity can give you that boost of confidence that youâre on the right track to face ANY challenge that is thrown your way. How to Format Your Resume Properly For a Job Interview
How to Format Your Resume Properly For a Job InterviewResume formatting can be a bit tricky, especially for new people entering the workforce. There are many ways to get started, however, the key is consistency.Every resume should have a heading's section at the top, followed by paragraph after paragraph. Following that, you want to divide the resume into logical groups of topics that make sense in order to make it easier to follow. After that, the resume should be formatted into its sections, which will be your main points. This should include your education, your job title, your experience, skills, and education. As a company wants to see this, each section should be about one paragraph long, which gives you more room to highlight what you do best. One crucial point to note about resumes is that they all start out different. So if you do not include it in your first ones, you need to put something together for each that you have gotten. You need to list them down and choose a topic o n which to place them.Make sure you list down any other credentials that you may have. You may have certification or previous work experience. If you have worked in the past for someone else, then put it in there. The more credentials that you list down, the easier it will be to go through and find what you may have missed. After you have formatted your resume to show them what you have, they should give you the opportunity to fill it out. It is usually a good idea to pick a topic to focus on and simply write about that. The other sections of the resume can then follow.Simple is better, but always remember to get something good. So many people try to skip formatting the resume, and even though it seems like it would just be a waste of time, this could cost you jobs. So make sure you get everything right, and it can be really helpful in the future.

Bill Gates The Jobs He Would Drop Out of College for
Bill Gates The Jobs He Would Drop Out of College for Bill Gates is often called Harvardâs most famous dropout. He notably ditched the top university in 1975 to found Microsoft, and became the worldâs richest man. Looking back, Gates has said he was lucky that computers were a hobby and an obsession of his at a time when they were just starting to change the world. But speaking on Friday at another Ivy League university, Columbia University, along with fellow billionaire and famous investor Warren Buffett, Gates said that if he were to drop out of college today thereâs a limited chance he would end up in the computer industry, and likely not in developing operating software for companies. Roughly 1,000 people, mostly students, gathered on the campus to hear the two billionaires speak. To be clear, Gates, whoâs now 61, wasnât at Columbia to advocate that students drop out of school. Gates believes in investing in education, and he said that is the No. 1 priority of his foundation in the United States. Nonetheless, responding to a question from a student, he named three areas that he said he found very promising, and where he might pursue a career if he were starting out today. Here they are: Artificial Intelligence If he were to go into computer sciences today, Gates said, the area that he thought had the most potential was artificial intelligence. Gates brought up a recent victory by Google DeepMind over the top player in the world at Go, a game some predicted a computer could never master. He called it a remarkable achievement that signaled there is more to come in advancement in artificial intelligence. And he said the research being done in the field now is âprofoundâ and on the verge of making new breakthroughs. âThe ability for artificial agents to read and understand material is going to be phenomenal,â says Gates. âAnything connected with that would be an exciting lifetime career.â Energy Sector Gates said there is a huge and growing demand for energy thatâs âreliable, cheap, and clean.â And Gates said there is no system yet today that can provide enough energy that meets those criteria. Thatâs why he sees energy as an area of opportunity for innovative minds, he told the audience of mostly university students. âThe innovations [in energy] will be profound,â said Gates. âAnd there are many paths to get to where we need to goâ Buffett, oddly, didnât chime in, but he would probably agree. His conglomerate Berkshire Hathaway owns a number of the nationâs largest utilities and has pledged to spend $30 billion developing alternative energy. Berkshire owns a number of wind farms, and will soon become the largest producer of wind energy in America. Biotech Gates said he thinks it is a thrilling time in biology and that developments in the biosciences are âmoving faster than ever.â He said he thought there was potential, and a need for smart innovation, in the fights against obesity, cancer, and depression. Among the most promising advances that Gates mentioned was DNA vaccines. On Donald Trump, Gates said that he was optimistic that the U.S.âs policy and spending on vaccines wouldnât change under the new president, despite some comments Trump has made raising concerns about scientifically unproven links between vaccines and autism. âI donât think Trump will change the U.S. policy stance on vaccines,â Gates said. âThere may be a commission but the evidence [for the use of vaccines] is unequivocal.â This story originally appeared on Fortune.

2 Surprising Things I Learned About Myself During My First Performance Review Since Changing Careers
2 Surprising Things I Learned About Myself During My First Performance Review Since Changing Careers Performance review season is a time to reflect. A chance to level up, buckle down and in some cases, back out. This was the case for both wertzuwachs reviews Ive ever had my first, a few years ago, when I was an elementary school teacher and my most recent, now that Im a writer and editor. But this wertzuwachs review was a little different because it came with an unexpected discovery two, in fact.I didnt just circle numbers, drop a few comments and create a plan of attack for the next six months. This review forced me to step out of myself for a second and truly look in the mirror at who I was in my first full-time role since changing careers. And with that, came the following reflections1. I had imposter syndrome. When word of this psychological pattern started going around a few years ago, I had no idea what it meant. It wasnt until my performance review that I was able to recognize it in myself imposter syndrome, a feeling of inadequacy in ones own accomplishments and abilities. Imposter syndrome can look like negative self-talk, lack of self-confidence or the inability to move past your own mistakes (among many other things). On a scale of Im not good at what I do to someone else could do my job better than me, I fell heavily on the latter. And my reasons for why were simple I was a recent career changer and was new to the editorial industry.I spent the first few months taking notes and listening intently. Then I spent the next month doing the same. And the next and the next. Speaking up in my new field felt like trying to jump into a double-dutch rope, and there I was stuck knees bent, swaying to the rhythm of the ropes on the sidelines.Sure, I have a writing and rhetoric degree, taught writing to middle school students and have a portfolio of my writing online. But sometimes, I felt like an AP student with straight As rendered obsolete when I struggled to u nderstand editorial vocabulary, data terms and success metrics. I didnt share many ideas or question much of anything. I just waited to be told what to do because I knew I could do that well. When my performance review rolled around, my manager popped my debilitating bubble of illusion with this simple statementYoure very engaged with the team (both the editorial team and Fairygodboss as a whole). Her perspective made me aware that Id put myself under an imaginary pressure somewhere along the line. That at some point, I started treating myself less warmly, saw myself with less authority and stopped giving myself the credit I deserved for being present. But my managers comment was an important one it let me know that what I was doing was enough. With that, I learned it doesnt matter how long it took me to learn how to swim in this new field. (Ive only been in it for six months, for goodness sake). My treading water looks like doggy paddling so thats all that matters so long as I work on my full strokes which I am.2. Im an advocate for unrepresented people and populations. In completing my own self-evaluation, I noticed a recurring theme in my writing diversity and inclusion. Every other article Ive written has been about Latinx women, the LGBTQ+ community or women in leadership. And looking back, Ive happily jumped at any opportunity to write about these topics or forged those opportunities myself (like the time I covered Bernadette Sheridans panel, a colleague who shared advice on how to stay competitive as a woman over 50 in todays digital work world).Ironically enough, I noticed this theme when I listed out the critical accomplishments section of my evaluation. The contributions I felt the most proud of were the ones that exercised my advocacy (and in many respects, my identity, too). Heres an excerpt of my reflectionLGBTQ+ contentI wrote comprehensive LGBTQ+ content in June and found high-volume KWs for production that month. This effort showed our awareness of gender diversity and identity and demonstrated our solidarity with the community.National Hispanic Heritage Month I edited the National Hispanic Heritage Month article to accurately reflect and recognize the Latinx community, and changed the tone from passive to active. This achievement positioned us as informed allies and activists on the state of immigration and Latinx-facing issues in our country. Before my self-evaluation, the only proof of my allyship to underrepresented groups was my Facebook page where I reposted social justice content on an inconsistent basis. Now, I had proof that I cared. And, to combat my imposter syndrome (because why not?), I had proof that my buttin this seat mattered.All-in-all, performance review season can be a scary time (which it totenstill was for me, just to be clear). But its also a time to reflect honestly about who you are, why youre in your role and if your role is truly the right fit for you.If you want to ease your pre-review jitters, t hen request 90-day performance reviews with your manager or schedule weekly meetings to discuss whats going well, where you could use more support and how you can get ahead of your workload. I had both with my manager before my bi-annual review and its probably why my discoveries were more pleasant than not.--Stephanie Nieves is the SEO Editorial Associate on the Fairygodboss team. Playing it safe at work
Playing it safe at work Playing it safe at workPosted October 13, 2011, by Mike Kermode When I was younger, my skateboard had a sticker somewhat ironically brandished on it. Safety is an attitude, not a process, it read. While neither my skating nor myself were exactly governed by this dictum, modern occupational health and safety (OHS) is undeniably about both a way of thinking and a highly systematised process. As Australia, along with the rest of the world, has become increasingly safety-conscious, the onus is on every manager and administrator to have knowledge of OHS practices to ensure the wellbeing and safety of their staff. Many industries are also in need of qualified OHS specialists who can bring workplace practices into line with current legislation. Here, that legislation is about to become nationally streamlined. As of the 1st of January 2012, were all technically going to be as safe as each other as the states harmonise their hitherto incongruous OHS laws. This makes i t an opportune time to get back to basics and ask what is OHS all about, anyway? Why is it so important? And what sort of opportunities are there in OHS for the ambitious and the safety-conscious? What you need to know about OHS One of the first things to realise about OHS is that it spans every industry. Not just those like construction or mining, where youd expect it, but every industry. Occupational health and safety principles apply to every workplace, and every business needs workers who are versed in OHS policy. The World Health Organization defines OHS as The promotion and maintenance of the highest degree of physical, mental and social well-being of workers in all occupations the prevention amongst workers of departures from health caused by their working conditions the protection of workers in their employment from risks resulting from factors adverse to health OHS is about preventing these departures from health for employees, customers and the general public by keepin g hazards and risks in check through hyper-vigilance. Keeping safe premises, having safe machinery and materials, providing safe systems at work, having sufficient training and supervision, and a suitable working environment OHS encompasses all of this. OHS draws on a host of different subject fields, including occupational gesundheitspflege and toxicology, public health, safety engineering, chemistry, health physics and law. Its big. In workplaces all over the country, it manifests in the presence of personal protection equipment (PPE) like helmets, gloves and goggles first aid kits on worksites the signage of hazardous substances and machinery ergonomic furniture a safe and comfortable office set-up and general safety standards and regulations. OHS procedures and laws are also designed for the protection of employers. How? By protecting them from losing productive workers and production time, losing the goodwill of a happy and healthy workforce, from workers compensation claims, and from the negative public perceptions that would arise if that employer was seen to be negligent when it comes to employee safety. The heart of OHS Modern OHS, then, is considered vital to the success of a business. For it to do its thing in a workplace, however, it requires two core processes hazard identification and risk assessment. And this gets to the heart of what OHS professionals do. A hazard is any situation that could potentially cause or result in harm to people or property (like a skateboard on the office floor). A risk is the chance of the hazard causing an injury (busy office = high risk). Then there is the severity of the outcome (potentially serious). Its the compiling of all the hazards, risks and their outcomes that enables a business to structure its approach to safety systematically. Its an important role, and one that must be performed by a safety expert. Safety in numbers Go on SEEK.com.au, and youll find hundreds of jobs for OHS specialists. The numbers attest to the importance placed on safety today, and also the extent of demand for qualified professionals. OHS manager/officer/coordinator Whatever the name, the brief is the same safety professional. unterstellung people are in charge of keeping employees aware of OHS procedures, keeping policies up-to-date, conducting safety audits and training, and promoting a safe work culture generally throughout a business. In close communication with management, theyre responsible for monitoring and modifying safety practices as work environments change identifying hazards and assessing risks. Injury management Sometimes the above brief is combined with incident investigation and injury management or return-to-work management. These professionals ensure that an injured worker receives the treatment they need to return to work, as well as income support during rehabilitation. Opportunities here include return-to-work coordinator, injury management advisor, case manager and injury claims con sultant. Consultancy and training Some organisations outsource their OHS management, relying on independent advice on how to best implement and standardise their health and safety practices, and train in-house OHS coordinators. There are many opportunities for these mobile safety pros. Products For those with the right background (be it medicine, engineering, industrial design or public health), there are also opportunities in the production of OHS infrastructure and equipment, ensuring that they meet safety standards and provide a high level of protection and usability. This encompasses products like safety signage, hi-vis clothing, tools, fire safety equipment, barriers and first aid kits. Safety qualifications To work as a safety professional, youll need a qualification in OHS. This could be anything from a statement of attainment to a certificate, diploma or advanced diploma, and you can even do graduate studies in OHS and become a highly qualified workplace safety specialist. Youll also need a fine set of communication skills. Youll be dealing with many employees from managementlevel to shop floor and youll be supporting, training and managing staff in their workplace practices. If its a higher level position, getting yourself a training and assessment certificate can help you become an OHS training leader in your workplace. Most importantly, youll need up-to-date knowledge of OHS legislation, which means understanding the changes to your states legislation in line with national harmonisation. There are also new safety products coming onto the market all the time, so knowing which are in step with safety standards is a must. Getting a qualification in OHS can be a valuable add-on to your role as a manager, HR professional or administrator, or can pave the way to a career specialising in workplace health and safety. In todays safety-conscious environment, a job in OHS is a sure bet youre virtually guaranteed a well-paid job, and youll be helping Aus tralian businesses function as safely and productively as possible.
